Columbus, Ohio- Freshman Tatum Skaggs netted two goals as the Ohio State women's ice hockey team defeated the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute by a score of 4-1 to open its season on Friday night at the OSU Ice Rink.

Skaggs scored the first goal of both the season and her career at the 11:26 mark of the first period off assists from Emma Maltais and Lauren Boyle.

OSU added to its lead in the second when Maddy Field picked up where she left off as the team points leader in 2016-17 with a goal, making it 2-0 just a minute and 34 seconds into the second period. Newcomer Grace Zarzecki and senior Dani Sadek assisted on the goal.

Zarzecki, however, would not settle for just getting an assist in her Ohio State debut. The junior transfer dropped one in the back of the net just 57 seconds into the third, the assists went to Charly Dahlquist and Sadek on this one. Tatum bookended her first game with her second goal, this one coming at the 3:39 point in the third, with assists from Maltais and Lisa Bruno.

The Engineers scored their lone goal in the third when Whitney Renn found a loose puck in a scrum in front OSU goaltender Kassidy Sauve, but it would not be enough as the Buckeyes cruised to a 4-1 victory. Sauve made 25 saves on the night.

"It's always great to start the season off with a win," said Head Coach Nadine Muzerall. "Our freshman and newcomers made a statement tonight, with Skaggs getting two goals, and Maltais picking up two assists. Zarzecki getting both a goal and an assist in her OSU debut is huge, and our returning players helped put our fresh faces in the positions to succeed. Being able to bank on Sauve quarterbacking us from the net is always big, her 25 saves tonight helped set the tone for us going forward as we word toward being the best team we can be."

Ohio State returns to the ice on Saturday for its series finale with RPI. Puck drop is scheduled for 3:07 p.m. at the OSU Ice Rink.
