COLUMBUS, Ohio - The No. 8/8 Ohio State University women's ice hockey team used overwhelming offensive and defensive performances to notch a 5-0 victory over the No. 9/9 Robert Morris Colonials on Friday night at the OSU Ice Rink
The Buckeyes (14-5-4, 8-2-4 WCHA) controlled the game from every aspect, outshooting RMU 38-to-34. Kassidy Sauvé blocked 34 shots to get here WCHA leading seventh shutout of the year. The redshirt junior ranks second in the NCAA in shutouts and her 581 saves rank third nationally. Tatum Skaggs had her fourth multi-goal game of the year, scoring her WCHA leading 14th and 15th goals.
Ohio State drew first blood when Rebecca Freiburger netted her third goal of the year at the 7:06 point in the first period. Grace Zarzecki and Liv Halvorson tallied assists on the goal. It looked like the 1-0 lead would hold until the intermission, but Skaggs wanted to add some cushion to the OSU lead and scored her first goal of the night with 1:34 left in the period.
The Buckeyes wasted no time in extending their lead in the second period as Emma Maltais lit the lamp for the ninth time this year just over a minute into the period. Less than two minutes later Skaggs found the back of the net for the second time tonight to give Ohio State the 4-0 lead it would carry into the third.
Just 38 seconds into the third, Maddy Field lit the lamp for OSU, giving them the 5-0 lead. From there it became the Sauvé show as she made 19 saves in the period to secure the 5-0 Buckeyes victory.
Nine different Buckeyes tallied assists in the game, with Lauren Boyle notching two herself. Zarzecki, Halvorson, Skaggs, Maltais, Julianna Iafallo, Charly Dahlquist, Liz Schepers and Jincy Dunne all made it onto the stat sheet for their facilitative efforts.
"I was really hard on the team this week because of how we played last Friday, I know we're better than that," head coach Nadine Muzerall said. "They responded and played really well tonight. As a coach, you can have a ton of ideas, but if the team doesn't execute you'll get nowhere. We executed tonight in every way."
The Buckeyes wrap up their series with Robert Morris tomorrow at the OSU Ice Rink. Puck drop is at 3:07 p.m.
