COLUMBUS, Ohio - The No. 8/8 Ohio State University women's ice hockey team used another offensive explosion, coupled with excellent goaltending, to wrap up a sweep of the No. 9/9 Robert Morris Colonials on Saturday afternoon at the OSU Ice Rink.
The Buckeyes (15-5-4, 8-2-4 WCHA) leaned heavily on Kassidy Sauvé and her 44 saves as RMU held a significant shots-on-goal advantage, putting up 46 to Ohio State's 21. Offensively, Charly Dahlquist had the best game of her Buckeye career with two goals and an assist. Four different Buckeyes netted goals, while five different players tallied assists.
Dahlquist opened the scoring for OSU just under six minutes into the first, when she took a smooth drop back pass from Tatum Skaggs after Dani Sadek started the play with a poke check. Less than a minute later, Dahlquist lit the lamp for the second time in the game to put the Buckeyes up 2-0. Skaggs earned another assist on the goal, while Emma Maltais got an assist as well. With OSU on a power play near the mid-point of the first, Rebecca Freiburger found the back of the net for the second time this weekend to give Ohio State a commanding 3-0 lead. RMU finally got on the board with their first goal of the weekend from Kirsten Welsh with just over eight minutes left in the period. OSU held a small SOG advantage at the end of the first, 10-to-9, and went into the break with a 3-1 lead.
The Colonials came out firing in the second, racking up 19 SOG, but only one would make it past Sauvé. Jessica Gazzola chipped away at the OSU lead with a goal at the 15:06 point in the period. Three Buckeye penalties put the team on the penalty kill for a significant chunk of the period, but thanks to Sauvé and the defense, the team went into the third leading 3-2.
Ohio State settled down in the third, committing no penalties, and went to work on putting the game out of reach. Maltais scored first, bumping the lead to 4-2, before Jincy Dunne put the cherry on top with her second goal of the year to give the Buckeyes the 5-2 lead. Sauvé made 18 more saves in the third as OSU finished the sweep of Robert Morris with a 5-2 win.
"Great teams find a way to win, and that's what we did today," head coach Nadine Muzerall said. "The second period could have come back to haunt us, but we made the right plays to keep that from happening. Kassidy provided a backbone that we needed to use the rest of our weapons today. At the end of the day, we won, but we've still got work to do."
The Buckeyes return to the ice when they host the No. 5/5 University of Minnesota Golden Gophers next weekend. Puck drop for the series opener is at 6:07 p.m. on Friday at the OSU Ice Rink.
