MINNEAPOLIS -- Taylor Heise scored a hat trick and Grace Zumwinkle netted two goals to lead the Maroon & Gold to a 9-0 win as the top-ranked Golden Gopher women's hockey team hosted the 2019 NCAA Division III national runner-up Hamline Pipers in an exhibition game at Ridder Arena on Tuesday night.
Minnesota (10-1-1, 6-1-1-1 WCHA) was led by Heise's four-point effort as she added an assist to her three goals. Zumwinkle was one of seven players to tally two points on the evening, and Makayla Pahl played her first complete game for the Maroon & Gold in net, finishing with 13 saves.
Hamline (0-1-0, 0-0-0 MIAC) received 15 saves on 19 shots faced by Jaela O'Brien in the opening period, 14 saves on 17 shots faced by McKenna Hulsland in the second period, and nine saves on 11 shots faced by Maddie Nickell in the third period. The Pipers are coached by Gophers alumna Natalie Darwitz, who is in her fifth season at the helm of the squad.
"Fun night of hockey here," head coach Brad Frost said. "It was a great opportunity to have a couple of friends, in Natalie and myself, be able to have our teams play against each other. Hopefully they got something out of it. I look forward to seeing how their season goes as they're just starting out. They're a real good team. They have some good goaltending and speed up front. It was just a fun night of hockey for us."
