COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Ohio State women's ice hockey team tied Minnesota Duluth 1-1 Saturday evening and earned the extra league point as freshman Jenn Gardiner converted in the shootout. With the tie, the Buckeyes move to 8-3-3 (6-3-3 WCHA) while the Bulldogs pick up their first tie and move to 7-4-1 (4-3-1 WCHA).


First Period

In a similar start to Friday's contest, Ohio State doubled the Bulldogs in shots, 12-6, in the opening period but neither team could convert. In the scoreless first period, Jincy Dunne led the Scarlet and Gray in shots with three while Tatum Skaggs, Rebecca Freiburger and Jenn Gardiner all tallied two apiece. Andrea Braendli started the game in net for the Buckeyes and notched six saves after 20 minutes.


Second Period

The Bulldogs broke the stalemate seven minutes into the second period as Anna Klein scored her fourth goal of the season, giving Duluth the 1-0 advantage and first lead of the weekend. With just over eight minutes to play in the period, Duluth was awarded a penalty shot after a tripping call on a breakaway but Braendli denied Ryleigh Houston to keep the deficit to one. In the 17th minute, Sophie Jaques tallied the equalizer as she got off a one-timer from an offensive faceoff win. Brooke Bink and Sara Saekkinen were awarded assists on the play and the score held at 1-all at the end of two. After a dominant first period by the Buckeyes, the Bulldogs took the edge in shots in the second 21-9 for a total of 27-21 in favor of Duluth.


Third Period

Ohio State picked up the tempo in the final period, outshooting the Bulldogs 10-3 to bring the total shots to 30-all after 60 minutes. The score held at 1-all through the final frame to force the overtime period.


Overtime

Despite numerous goal-scoring chances for either team, the score held at 1-1 while Ohio State outshot Duluth 4-3 throughout overtime. With seconds remaining, Maltais rattled a shot off the post as the extra league point was decided by the penalty shootout.
